Robert

Gwen thinks this is a work meeting. I know because when she shows up at my place, she is still dressed in her work clothes, and she has the little crinkle in her forehead from frowning too much. She drags her feet into the living room as soon as I open the door, and she collapses face down into the couch. Her bag drops onto the floor with a dull thunk.

“Ah,” she sighs into the cushion. “I’ve had the longest day.”

I go over to her and squat on the couch just at her hip. I reach over and unbuckle the shoes from her feet, slide them off slowly. I run a hand over the lovely curve of her instep, then up along her leg. When I get to the calf, I start to massage gently.

She sighs deeply. “That feels so good.” I can almost feel the tension leave her body, the way she lets go and allows herself to relax. It’s easy to take for granted just how hard Gwen works; she never shows any signs of fatigue.

“No,” she says suddenly, twisting away from my hands and turning around. She sits up and blinks to refocus. “If I get comfortable, I’ll fall asleep. And then I won’t be any use, and we won’t get this meeting underway.”

“What meeting?” I ask her, smiling slightly.

Gwen frowns, her lips pushed out in an uncertain pout. “You texted me to meet you here? You said it was urgent.”

“Well, perhaps I shouldn’t have used the word ‘urgent.’”

“What’s going on, Robert?” she asks. Her eyes take in my appearance for the first time, and the look of confusion does not leave her face.

“Is that an apron?” she asks as if she is seeing me for the first time. “Are you cooking?”

“Yes,” I say cheerily. “I’m sorry if I alarmed you or gave you the wrong impression. I wanted to make you dinner, that’s it.”

It takes a second, but the relief slowly seeps into her face, and it breaks into a truly radiant smile. I think Gwen might have the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. She is a beautiful woman, but when she smiles, she’s quite the vision.

“Oh my God, really?”

“Of course. I figured you need a bit of a breather. I know how hard you’ve been working for me, and I don’t think I’ve gotten the chance to say thank you just yet.”

She leans back into the chair, and her expression is suddenly tender. “You don’t have to thank me, Robert. I’m just doing my job.”

“I know,” I say. “But you’re doing much more than that. I believe it’s called ‘going above and beyond’?”

She saddles up closer to me on the couch, and I put an arm around her shoulder. Her head falls onto my chest. Her hair smells like coconut oil.

“Well, I guess I have a soft spot for this particular client,” she says.

The oven timer dings, a sharp sound that cuts through the house, startling us both.

“That will be the chicken,” I announce proudly.
